What is product margin?
Product margin shows how much of a product's selling price remains after the costs included in the calculation. For e-commerce, looking beyond product cost alone can give a more useful view of contribution profit.
How to calculate product margin
A simple margin calculation is profit divided by selling price, multiplied by 100. The useful part is defining profit consistently and including the order-level costs that matter to your business.
Include the costs behind each order
Product cost, packaging, shipping, payment fees, advertising, expected RTO costs and platform fees can all affect the contribution left from a sale.
Why RTO matters to margin
When some orders return to origin, expected revenue changes and RTO costs can reduce contribution profit. Including an expected RTO rate makes the estimate more realistic for COD businesses.
Margin is not the same as markup
Margin measures profit as a percentage of selling price. Markup measures profit relative to cost. They answer different pricing questions.
Use margin to make pricing decisions
A product with strong sales can still produce weak profit if its margin is compressed by advertising, shipping, fees or returns. Compare margin with your actual operating costs before scaling.
Use the result as an estimate
Actual courier, marketplace, payment, advertising and return charges can vary. Use the calculator as a planning tool and compare it with your real order reports.

Frequently asked questions
What is product margin?
Product margin is the profit from a sale expressed as a percentage of selling price. The result depends on which costs are included in the profit calculation.
What is a good e-commerce profit margin?
There is no single margin that is right for every store. Product type, advertising, shipping, returns, payment fees and operating costs all affect the margin a business needs.
Does RTO affect product margin?
Yes. Expected RTO can reduce revenue and add return-related costs, which can lower contribution profit and margin.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin expresses profit as a percentage of selling price, while markup expresses profit relative to cost.
